Pageantry

Posted in Arts and Culture, Randomness on March 26, 2007 by V.Jay Kendall

This is probably the most embarrassing thing I will not admit to anyone, except you guys. I enjoy pageants as much as I love critiquing dresses and male outfits on Oscar nights and home interior shows. Whenever I get bored or jam to a new song I always imagine myself strutting or swaggering down a catwalk and practicing my poses in case there is a pageant I would like to join in.

But this pageant dream of mine, along with my aspirations of becoming a speed skater is one of those dreams that have no purpose for me to fulfil. I will keep dreaming and hoping but there are other things that I enjoy than Mr. Congeniality and becoming the next Winter Olympian. Shoot, there a lot of things I would love to be: A Landscape Architect (which I really hope to do), interior designer, an Architect that does not have to draw buildings….

Anyways, Ms. USA was last week and Tennessee got the nod. Ms. Universe is coming up in June and the current Ms. Universe (from Puerto Rico) will crown her successor. Mr. Gay International was a few months ago and there is no interest there because they are mostly all twinks (keyword: mostly, not all) and the Mr. Gay Tampa Bay did not get it. He was snubbed.

If there is one reward I have received from college, besides my education, is my newfound respect for the subject of humanities and art. I took a short field trip to the Dali Museum in St. Petersburg, Florida late 2005 and remembered how I transformed from not knowing anything about paintings and their significance to loving and appreciating the symbolism found in them.

I am still not a huge fan of classical paintings but I do love Surrealism and any art form of the 20th century. I have always loved photography and montages mainly because I was seriously thinking into a career in Photography, but thats good for another time to talk about.

In that one day, I went from thinking “What was Dali tripping on?” to “Shoot, this stuff is tight!”

Anyone who knows about surrealism and the paintings associated with that category should know that its not your ordinary portrait. Its much more fun and exciting once you get to know more about the painter. I suggest to anyone even remotely interested in the arts to really make some time to visit a museum that tickles their fancy. I am more into the modernist paintings and surrealism so the Dali Museum was great. That place has the largest collection of his paintings anywhere.

FYI: If you come to St. Pete or anywhere in Florida, just give me a holler and I’ll show you around.
